Yeovil Town’s Winless Streak Continues Despite Deserved Effort

Scunthorpe United extended their unbeaten National League run to five games with a narrow 1-0 victory over Yeovil Town at the Attis Arena. The match’s only goal came in the 22nd minute when Tyrell Sellars-Fleming capitalized on a defensive mistake, tapping into an empty net after Declan Howe dispossessed Yeovil goalkeeper Jed Ward and set up the chance.

Yeovil had their opportunities, with Alfie Beestin firing wide and James Plant denied by an outstanding save from Scunthorpe goalkeeper Rory Mahady, who was making his home debut. Despite Ward’s saves and some near-misses from Zain Westbrooke and Carlton Ubaezuonu, Yeovil were unable to find the net, extending their winless run to five games, including four defeats.

Glovers’ manager Richard Dryden expressed his frustration but remained proud of his team’s effort. Speaking to BBC Somerset, Dryden reflected, “There was nothing in the game. We gave them a goal and goals change games. It became a bit of a long ball game, partly due to the pitch and the pressing from both sides. We probably deserved something, but sometimes in football, you don’t get everything you deserve. We fought and scrapped well, and Scunthorpe are up in fourth place for a reason, but we should have come out with something.”

Elsewhere in the National League South, Weston-super-Mare bounced back from a 3-0 midweek defeat by securing a dramatic 2-1 win at Eastbourne Borough, maintaining their second-place standing, six points behind leaders Hornchurch. After a goalless first half, Sam Avery opened the scoring for Weston shortly after the break, finishing from close range following a saved effort from Louis Britton. A crucial penalty save by goalkeeper Max Harris denied Eastbourne an equalizer earlier in the second half, but Eastbourne eventually leveled in the 87th minute through Kai Corbett. Weston clinched victory deep into stoppage time when Britton struck a low, 25-yard free-kick that sparked jubilant celebrations.

In other National League South action, Bath City earned a valuable 0-0 draw against Dagenham & Redbridge at Twerton Park, moving five points clear of the relegation zone. Bath started brightly with some early chances, while Dagenham struggled to convert their possession into clear scoring opportunities. Notably, former Liverpool and England striker Andy Carroll was gifted a late chance but shot wide. Bath’s defense remained resolute throughout, with goalkeeper Harvey Wiles-Richards rarely troubled, securing a well-earned point with solid defensive work in the closing stages.
