Yeovil Town urged to sharpen finishing after Worthing stalemate

Yeovil Town manager Billy Rowley has called for greater clinical edge from his players following their 1-1 draw with Worthing at Huish Park on Tuesday evening.

The visitors took the lead in the 28th minute when Razzaq Coleman capitalised on a rare error from Yeovil goalkeeper Jos Barker. However, Yeovil responded swiftly, levelling just a minute after the interval courtesy of an own goal by Joe Cook, who inadvertently deflected Brett McGavin’s well-delivered free-kick into the net.

Reflecting on the match, Rowley said: “I think both teams will feel they had chances to win the game, so it’s a mixed feeling. It’s probably a fair point overall.”

He acknowledged that while Yeovil created opportunities, there is room to improve in the final third. “We certainly had chances to win, but we need to be sharper and have more conviction in our finishing. Clearly, we expect to score goals at home. The fans want to see us get the ball into the box and push forward when possible.”

Recalling the moment the visitors took the lead, Rowley added: “We were in a good spell and felt we were building pressure when one mistake resulted in us going a goal down. Worthing have some quality players capable of exploiting such moments.”

He described the contest as a close battle, comparing it to “two middleweight boxers swinging for 90 minutes, both searching for a knockout. In the end, we finished on points.”

Discussing the equaliser, Rowley commented: “If the ball had been on target, Brett deserves credit. He is one of the best set-piece takers I’ve seen and I’m confident he’ll increase his goal and assist tally from dead-ball situations. I was pleased for him; it was a great delivery and a positive start to the second half. It was unfortunate we couldn’t maintain momentum to secure a winner.”

Yeovil will be hoping to translate these lessons into sharper performances as the season progresses.
