Yeovil Town ‘Limping to the Line’ as Boss Admits Squad Struggles

Yeovil Town endured a tough away trip at the weekend, falling 3-0 to promotion favorites York City. The Minstermen secured a fifth consecutive victory thanks to goals from Ollie Pearce, Josh Stones, and Joe Grey, maintaining their two-point lead over Rochdale ahead of a crucial top-two clash.

Despite some resilient goalkeeping from Yeovil’s Jed Ward, who made impressive saves against Stones and Ollie Banks, York broke the deadlock in the 23rd minute. Captain Ollie Pearce rose highest to head home the opening goal. Stones doubled the advantage just before halftime with a precise low strike beyond Ward.

After the interval, Ward continued to deny Stones on two occasions, but York sealed the match in stoppage time when Joe Grey struck to complete a commanding win for Stuart Maynard’s squad. This victory puts York City firmly in control of their automatic promotion hopes, aiming to return to the Football League for the first time in ten years.

Following the defeat in their penultimate game of the season, Yeovil manager Billy Rowley spoke candidly to BBC Somerset’s Josh Perkins. “We’re sort of limping to the line at the minute,” he admitted. “We suffered another injury in training—Terrell Works hurt his hamstring and had to miss the squad. We also had to rely on two young academy players on the bench. Even Dak Mafico was limited to 45-60 minutes.

“So look, I’ve got the violin out here a little bit. We were beaten by a far better team, more equipped to win this division than we are. They deserved the 3-0 win.”
