Yeovil Town manager Billy Rowley acknowledged the grit and determination his team showed to secure a place in the FA Trophy fourth round after a tense penalty shootout win against Maidstone United at Huish Park. The match was a battle from start to finish, characterized by fierce duels and limited clear chances.
The game appeared to be won in stoppage time when debutant Josh Tobin headed home from a James Daly cross, giving Yeovil a late lead. However, Maidstone’s Hamazad Kargbo dramatically equalized in the 92nd minute, pushing the match into a penalty shootout.
Throughout the game, Rowley praised Maidstone’s physical and tenacious style of play, describing them as “hard, tough and strong.” He also admitted that while Yeovil’s build-up play showed promise, their finishing lacked precision. Despite the unconvincing display, Yeovil achieved their third consecutive victory, maintaining Rowley’s 100% win record since taking charge.

Rowley commended Tobin’s impactful debut, especially noting his bravery and ability to control the ball under pressure, though the player is still regaining full match fitness after a period out. “It’s a shame we couldn’t hold onto the win to properly celebrate his goal,” said Rowley.
The shootout was where Yeovil’s composure shone brightest, with goalkeeper Jed Ward making crucial saves that helped his side triumph 4-2 on penalties. Rowley lauded Ward’s outstanding performance, describing it as “unreal.” The shootout took place in front of the energetic Thatcher’s End supporters, whose vocal backing was a significant boost to the home side.
Looking ahead, Rowley expressed eagerness for the next round and a preference for another home fixture, stating, “I love playing here,” but also welcomed the challenge regardless of the venue.
