Yeovil Town Gritty Penalty Win Secures FA Trophy Fourth Round Spot

Yeovil Town manager Billy Rowley praised his team’s tenacity after a hard-fought victory on penalties against Maidstone United at Huish Park, advancing to the fourth round of the FA Trophy.

The match was a challenging encounter, characterized by tough battles and limited clear-cut chances. Debutant Josh Tobin gave Yeovil hope with a late header that seemed to seal the win, only for Maidstone to equalize in the 92nd minute, pushing the game into a penalty shootout.

Yeovil’s goalkeeper Jed Ward became the hero by saving two penalties, guiding the Glovers to a 4-2 shootout triumph. Rowley recognized the resilience of both teams, giving credit to the opposition while admitting that Yeovil’s play in attack lacked precision. “Some of our build-up was promising, but our final passes didn’t quite hit the mark,” he reflected.

This victory marked Yeovil’s third consecutive win, keeping Rowley’s unbeaten start intact. The manager emphasized the team’s adaptability, noting, “The game was tough and ugly. We had to roll up our sleeves, win duels, and fight for second balls.”

Tobin’s debut was a highlight despite the late equalizer. Rowley praised his courage and ball skills, acknowledging the midfielder’s ongoing fitness recovery. “He’s brave on the ball, attacks tight areas, and looks to play forward. It’s unfortunate we couldn’t hold on to emphasize his goal more,” Rowley added.

Though penalties are often unpredictable, Rowley expressed confidence in his technically skilled squad and outstanding goalkeeper. “Penalties are a lottery, but with good technicians and a great keeper, your chances increase.”

Ward’s performance under pressure delighted Rowley, who said, “Massive credit to Jed—he was unreal during the shootout.”

The shootout took place in front of the Thatcher’s End, providing a boost heard by the team throughout the game. “The fans were excellent,” Rowley said, praising their unwavering support.

Looking forward, Rowley welcomed the challenge of the next round, hoping for a home tie but ready for any opponent: “I love playing here, but bring it on wherever.”
