Yeovil Town Football Club has been granted an additional two years to repurchase Huish Park Stadium and its surrounding land from Somerset Council. Originally purchased by South Somerset District Council in May 2022 for approximately £2.8 million to alleviate the club’s financial struggles caused by the pandemic, the stadium remains under council ownership while the club continues to lease it.
The original buyback option was set to expire on May 17, 2026. However, following discussions with the club’s ambitious new owners, Somerset Council—successor to the district council as of April 2023—has extended this period until May 2028. This extension aims to provide Yeovil Town FC with the flexibility needed to secure long-term investment and to develop a comprehensive strategy for the club’s future.
Councillor Mike Rigby, portfolio holder for economic development, emphasized that the move significantly eases the path for the club’s progression. “They’re keen to buy the site back but are putting together a bigger plan for what comes next, and it may take them a little time—certainly beyond May—before they are ready to make that transaction,” he said. Rigby also confirmed the council’s financial interest remains secure, with the club paying an index-linked rent of £229,130 annually.

Despite owning Huish Park, the council has no role in the club’s governance or decisions. Councillor Sarah Wakefield, responsible for adults' services and housing, expressed support for the potential sale once the club is ready to proceed, while Councillor Val Keitch voiced some caution, reflecting on her history with the club and concern about the requested extension.
After a brief committee debate, the council unanimously approved the extension. Rigby highlighted Yeovil Town FC’s unique status as the only professional football club in Somerset and its vital contribution to the local economy, community well-being, and civic pride. He added that a successful club benefits residents through sports, education, and economic opportunities, while also helping the council’s financial needs.
Yeovil Town’s owner and chairman, Prabhu Srinivasan, affirmed the club’s commitment to the buyback and future ambitions. “From the outset, we have been clear with supporters that our aim is to buy back Huish Park Stadium and reunite it with the football club,” he stated. “Together, we are committed to creating a brighter future for both Yeovil Town FC and Somerset, built around sustainability and our ambitious plans for the club and the community.”
