Yeovil Town Fall to York City as Title Race Goes Down to the Wire

York City strengthened their grip on automatic promotion to the Football League with a commanding 3-0 victory over Yeovil Town in their penultimate match of the season. The Minstermen’s win marked their fifth consecutive triumph, propelling them two points clear of Rochdale heading into next weekend’s decisive clash between the top two contenders.

The match opener came in the 23rd minute when York captain Ollie Pearce soared above the Yeovil defense to head home from a precise delivery by Ollie Banks. Yeovil goalkeeper Jed Ward was kept busy, pulling off crucial saves to deny both Josh Stones and Ollie Banks in goal-scoring opportunities.

Just before halftime, Stones extended York’s lead by maneuvering into space and firing a low shot past Ward, giving the Minstermen a comfortable 2-0 cushion at the break. In the second half, Ward again thwarted Stones’ attempts to add to his tally, but York sealed the victory deep into stoppage time with Joe Grey’s late strike.

Despite the heavy defeat, Yeovil will be encouraged that Rochdale’s late goal elsewhere means the title battle remains open, setting the stage for a winner-takes-all showdown next Sunday.
