Billy Rowley described Yeovil Town’s 4-1 loss to AFC Fylde at Huish Park as “a bit of a freak game,” reflecting on the team’s defensive lapses and unfortunate timing during the match.
This defeat marked Yeovil’s second consecutive home loss, with Fylde’s Greg Olley and Luca Thomas each netting two goals to secure the win. Yeovil’s Luke McCormick managed to pull one back in the second half, but Olley quickly restored Fylde’s three-goal lead shortly afterwards.
Rowley acknowledged: “There are probably two sides to it. Defensively, especially during transitions and counter-pressing moments, we were not at our best. But I also think it was a bit of a freak game. We experienced something similar last season against Solihull, where almost every shot they took found the back of the net.”

Yeovil had a chance just before half-time when Archie Davies struck the post, which could have levelled the score. However, Fylde seized the moment to score again on the other end.
“Had we made it 1-1 Minutes before half-time, the team talk would have been positive, the fans would have been energized, and we probably would have gone on to win the game,” Rowley said. “Instead, conceding to make it 2-0 created a steeper hill for us to climb.”
At half-time, Rowley made tactical changes, introducing Johl Powell and Slavi Spasov in place of Ben Radcliffe and Stephen Walker in an attempt to adjust their pressing game.
“Radders came off due to injury, and Ste was substituted as we wanted to change our press,” he explained. “There were some decent performances today; I thought Hayden Muller was excellent in midfield.”
Joy Mukena was also substituted shortly after Fylde’s third goal, with Rowley uncertain about the extent of injuries to Mukena and Radcliffe. “I hope Joy’s hamstring is just a precautionary issue. For Radders, I’m not sure yet.”
McCormick’s goal briefly sparked hope, but Fylde responded quickly with Olley’s second, capitalising on a counter-attack where Yeovil’s defensive shape faltered.
Despite the heavy defeat, Rowley remains optimistic about his rebuilt squad’s development. “I’ve been through this before when I rebuilt a team two years ago. We had ups and downs until Christmas, then we began to find our rhythm. I fully expect the same to happen now.”
Yeovil will look to bounce back as they travel to Aldershot on Tuesday night, aiming to secure their first win since the disappointing home defeats.
