Yeovil Town manager Billy Rowley described his side’s 4-1 home defeat to AFC Fylde as “a bit of a freak game” following their second successive loss at Huish Park. The visitors took a commanding lead with Greg Olley and Luca Thomas both scoring two goals each, while Luke McCormick’s strike for Yeovil gave the Glovers a brief glimmer of hope during the second half before Olley restored Fylde’s three-goal cushion shortly after.
Rowley acknowledged defensive issues, particularly during transitions and counter-pressing moments, but remained convinced that the outcome did not reflect the team’s overall ability. “There’s probably two sides of it for me, there’s the side that I felt the defensive side, particularly in transitions or counter pressing moments wasn’t great,” he said. “The second part, I think it was just a bit of a freak game, we experienced that last game of the season against Solihull where every shot they hit went in.”
Yeovil had an opportunity to equalise just before half-time when Archie Davies’ shot struck the post, only for Fylde to break quickly and extend their lead to 2-0. Rowley felt the match might have taken a different course had the Glovers scored at that moment. “Would have made the game 1-1 minutes before half-time, we’d have had a positive team talk, fans would have been in on our side and we probably go on to win the game,” he reflected. “That’s football, go down the other end and it’s 2-0 and it’s a slightly steeper hill to climb.”

At the interval, Rowley made two substitutions to alter Yeovil’s pressing approach, bringing on Johl Powell and Slavi Spasov for Ben Radcliffe and Stephen Walker. Radcliffe was substituted with an injury concern, though Rowley was unsure of the extent. Joy Mukena was also taken off shortly after Fylde’s third goal, with the manager hopeful it was a precautionary measure for a hamstring issue.
Despite the setback, Rowley highlighted positive individual performances, singling out midfielder Hayden Muller for praise. Luke McCormick’s goal provided a brief boost, but Fylde quickly capitalised on a counter-attack to restore their three-goal advantage. “Macca gets a goal back, really good finish,” Rowley said. “And then minutes after that we conceded a counter attack, player structure was slightly wrong.”
Looking ahead, Rowley remains confident in the progress of his rebuilt squad, recalling a similar period two years ago when the team gradually found form after early inconsistencies. “I’ve been here before, I rebuilt a team two years ago, we were up & down a little bit till Christmas, then we started to come good and I fully expect the same thing.”
Yeovil Town have the chance to respond quickly as they travel to Aldershot on Tuesday night, aiming to return to winning ways.
