Yeovil is set to become home to a new air ambulance base, following plans unveiled by Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance (DSAA). The charity has launched a public consultation regarding its proposal to build the facility at the Leonardo helicopter site.
This new base will be equipped not only to deploy air ambulances quickly but also to offer dedicated spaces for clinical training, operational planning, aftercare for parents and families, and community engagement activities.
Charles Hackett, CEO of DSAA, emphasized the importance of local input: “Securing planning permission is crucial for our move to Yeovil, so hearing from local residents is essential. This consultation allows people to learn about our plans, ask questions, provide feedback, and show support.”

Hackett further highlighted the benefits: “We hope the community shares our vision and appreciates how this base will enhance our service capabilities, expand our reach to more patients, and help us forge a strong and lasting relationship with Yeovil.”
In 2025 alone, DSAA responded to 2,738 emergencies, provided lifesaving blood transfusions to 64 patients, supported 190 pediatric cases, and facilitated 18 urgent inter-hospital transfers. Beyond emergency response, the charity runs CPR training and community outreach events.
Currently based in Templecombe, Somerset, DSAA’s proposed Yeovil base aims to strengthen its ability to save lives across Dorset and Somerset.
To engage with the community, DSAA will host a drop-in event on Tuesday, June 2, from 4pm to 7pm at The Parish Suite, Westlands Entertainment Centre in Yeovil. Residents can meet the project team and DSAA representatives to discuss the proposal.
Feedback is welcomed through forms available online, at the drop-in event, or via email at [email protected]. Written responses can also be sent by post to Freepost, Fairthorn Consultancy, with no stamp required. The deadline for submissions is Sunday, June 13.
