Yeovil Set to Host New Air Ambulance Base at Leonardo Site

Yeovil is poised to become the new home for a Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance (DSAA) base, as the charity launches a public consultation on plans to build the facility at the Leonardo helicopter site.

The proposed base aims to enhance emergency response capabilities with dedicated spaces for air ambulance deployment, clinical training, operational planning, family aftercare, and community engagement. This initiative underscores DSAA’s commitment to expanding its reach and strengthening its service.

Charles Hackett, CEO of DSAA, emphasized the importance of local support: “Securing planning permission for our move to Yeovil depends on residents’ feedback. This consultation offers the community a chance to learn more, ask questions, and contribute their views. We believe the new base will not only improve emergency response but also foster a strong connection with the Yeovil community.”

In 2025 alone, DSAA responded to 2,738 life-saving callouts, administered blood transfusions to 64 patients, assisted 190 paediatric cases, and conducted 18 critical inter-hospital transfers. Beyond emergency care, DSAA actively promotes life-saving skills through CPR training and community outreach events.

Currently based in Templecombe, DSAA plans to enhance its operational capabilities with this new facility. A community drop-in event is scheduled for Tuesday, June 2, from 4 to 7 pm at The Parish Suite, Westlands Entertainment Centre, where residents can meet the project team and provide input.

Feedback on the proposals is welcomed by Sunday, June 13, and can be submitted online, at the drop-in event, via email at [email protected], or by post to Freepost, Fairthorn Consultancy (no stamp required). This is a valuable opportunity for the Yeovil community to support a vital lifesaving service.
