Yeovil Hospital Reopens Maternity Services and Special Care Baby Unit After Safety Enhancements

Yeovil District Hospital has officially reopened its inpatient maternity services and Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) after nearly a year of closure prompted by safety concerns raised by the Care Quality Commission in May 2025.

The reopening took place on Tuesday, April 21, with Sally Bryant, the Director of Midwifery, expressing full confidence in the renewed safety and quality of care. “Our teams have done a huge amount of work to put these improvements in place, and we’re really pleased to be welcoming women, birthing people, and families back to Yeovil,” Bryant said.

She extended gratitude to healthcare partners, local communities, service users, and families for their patience and support during the closure. Special thanks were given to the Somerset Maternity and Neonatal Voices Partnership, a collaborative body that helped ensure the reopening was informed by women’s and families’ experiences, reinforcing a commitment to ongoing listening, learning, and service improvement.

The Somerset NHS Foundation Trust emphasized the significance of this reopening as a milestone for local families and staff alike. “While the temporary closure allowed us to focus on implementing essential safety improvements, today symbolizes the dedication and hard work invested in reaching this point,” the Trust stated.

Key improvements over the past year include enhanced staffing levels, strengthened leadership, expanded training programs, improved governance structures, and the recruitment of additional senior paediatric consultants. Furthermore, the Trust increased senior medical coverage during evenings and weekends, bolstered maternity and neonatal teams, and introduced clearer safety monitoring and escalation procedures.

Professor Deirdre Fowler, Chief Nurse and Midwife, shared her enthusiasm for welcoming back mothers, babies, and families. She acknowledged the ongoing efforts of the maternity and paediatric teams as they finalize preparations. Fowler also expressed thanks to Dorset County Hospital and Musgrove Park Hospital for their support in caring for families during Yeovil’s temporary closure.

Lastly, she conveyed deep appreciation for the families who experienced service transfers during the hiatus, recognizing their understanding and continued trust.

The Trust is confident that these comprehensive measures have effectively addressed previous safety concerns, ensuring that Yeovil District Hospital can provide secure, high-quality maternity and neonatal care once again.
