Nearly 40 residents spent the night away from home after suspicious items were discovered during a property search in Worle on Wednesday, September 30. A 70-year-old man was arrested in Becket Road on suspicion of fraud by false representation, prompting a police investigation that led to the establishment of a 100 metre cordon around the vicinity.
As a precaution, 153 properties within the cordon were evacuated. Those affected were not allowed to return to their homes until Thursday morning, after bomb disposal experts had safely destroyed the suspicious items overnight.
Several roads were partially or completely within the cordoned area, impacting local residents and traffic. To support those displaced, North Somerset Council set up a reception centre at Castle Batch Children’s Centre, followed by an overnight rest centre at The Campus in Worle.

The council reported that 28 people and six dogs were accommodated at The Campus overnight, while nine others were assisted in hotels. It praised the strong community spirit shown, highlighting the efforts of staff, local organisations, and volunteers who ensured residents were well cared for during the disruption.
A council spokesperson said: “We are very grateful to our staff who worked through the night, as well as to all the local organisations and volunteers who stepped up to support people while they could not return home. This was a heart-warming example of community spirit.”
Avon and Somerset Police extended their gratitude to the displaced residents, their friends, and families for their patience. The force also acknowledged local businesses that provided food and assistance to those affected by the cordon.
Residents have since been able to return to their homes following the controlled disposal of the suspicious items and the lifting of the cordon.
