A man in his 70s was arrested after a police search at a Worle property led to the discovery of multiple explosive substances, prompting a large-scale evacuation. On September 30, officers conducting enquiries found suspicious items at the address, resulting in the establishment of a 100-metre cordon around the area near Weston-super-Mare.
More than 150 homes were evacuated overnight, and residents were allowed to return by the following morning. One resident, Darren Seedhouse, 53, described the situation as “unprecedented” for the area. He recounted returning from the shops to find his road blocked by police tape and expressing concern over the uncertainty of the evacuation’s duration. A community centre was opened for those displaced, where frustration grew among residents over issues such as leaving pets behind and concerns about medication for elderly people.
Despite limited rest during the incident, Mr Seedhouse praised the police for their treatment of residents, acknowledging the challenges of maintaining operational security during such an event.

Following the controlled removal of the explosive substances, further items including an air rifle, a firearm, and drugs were also seized. Police have confirmed that enquiries are ongoing and that the suspect remains in custody.
In addition to the initial property, bomb disposal officers examined a second non-residential site near Hewish off the A370. The search concluded without finding explosives or any other concerning items.
North Somerset Policing Superintendent Jen Appleford assured the public that there is no wider risk associated with the incident and that it appears to be isolated. The man initially faced charges of fraud by false representation and has since been further charged with possession of explosives for an unlawful purpose.
The evacuation involved 153 properties, with a refuge centre established at the nearby Castle Batch Children’s Centre. Police investigations continue as they work to establish the full circumstances of the case.
