Workshop Containing Fuel Destroyed by Fire in Somerset

A fire erupted last night (Wednesday, February 4) at a workshop in the rear garden of a property on Taunton Road, Bridgwater, leading to significant destruction. The workshop, which stored machinery and fuel, was engulfed in flames, prompting a rapid response from Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue.

At 7:22 pm, two fire crews from Bridgwater were dispatched after reports of a garage fire. Upon arrival, firefighters found the workshop fully ablaze and at risk of spreading to an adjacent garage. To reinforce efforts, a third crew from Burnham-on-Sea was called to the scene.

Thanks to the coordinated teamwork and use of firefighting equipment—including four breathing apparatus sets, a hose reel jet, a safety jet, and two triple extension ladders—the fire was contained within the initial garage. Although the adjoining garage suffered smoke damage, it was spared from flames.

The fire was declared under control by 9:10 pm. However, the workshop was severely damaged, with the fire destroying all its contents and causing approximately 80% structural damage. Firefighters conducted thorough checks using three thermal imaging cameras to identify and extinguish remaining hotspots.

Fortunately, there were no injuries resulting from the fire. The cause is believed to be accidental, and responsibility for the site has been returned to the property owners.
