Work on New Transport Hub in Picturesque Somerset Village to Begin in January

Construction of a modern transport hub in the charming Somerset village of Pill is set to commence in January, with completion scheduled for March. Located just four miles from Bristol on the Somerset border, Pill is poised to benefit from significant transport enhancements aimed at improving the daily commute for residents.

Cllr Hugh Malyan, Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport at North Somerset Council, emphasized the project’s community focus: “The new transport hub in Pill is about making everyday journeys better for local people. By improving waiting areas, accessibility, and connections, we’re helping residents feel more confident using public transport while creating a welcoming space at the heart of the community.”

The project includes replacing existing bus shelters on Heywood Road with new, modern shelters equipped with real-time bus information screens—a key improvement to keep passengers informed and comfortable.

Pill is on the brink of expansion, with plans underway to build 1,000 additional homes. Its proximity to Bristol makes it an increasingly attractive choice for commuters, making these transport upgrades timely and essential.

These developments form part of the broader Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP), which encompasses enhancements across North Somerset. The BSIP involves upgrading approximately 150 bus stops and shelters, expanding transport hubs in strategic towns, improving connectivity to the Portishead-Bristol rail line, and reopening Pill’s railway station to reintegrate the village into the national rail network.

In November, work began on upgrading the Lime Kiln Roundabout on the A38—a crucial junction connecting North Somerset and Bristol. This project will continue through May next year, with anticipated lane closures during the construction period.

North Somerset Council Leader Cllr Mike Bell highlighted the significance of these initiatives: “Good bus services are important to us all, and we have a clear vision for improving bus services across our region. The BSIP offers a fantastic opportunity to raise standards for all bus users in the area. We aim to ensure North Somerset remains accessible and well-connected for all road users now and into the future.”
