Work Begins on 24 New Affordable, Energy-Efficient Homes Near Frome Industrial Estate

Construction has officially started on a new housing development in Frome, delivering 24 affordable homes near one of the town’s key employment hubs. Approved by Mendip District Council in January 2023, Stonewater’s project at Cherry Grove—located north of Chantry Day Hospital and adjacent to the Marston Road industrial estate—aims to provide high-quality, low-cost housing for local residents.

The groundbreaking ceremony took place on May 8, with representatives from Frome Town Council and Somerset Council, which took over district council responsibilities in April 2023, in attendance. These energy-efficient homes are designed to be ready for occupation by late April 2026 and will be offered to residents at below-market rental rates.

Built to rigorous Passivhaus standards, the homes feature superior insulation, airtight construction, high-performance windows and doors, and ‘thermal bridge free’ design. These features collectively reduce heating bills by up to 90%, offering significant cost savings and environmental benefits.

Martock-based Ashcot Construction Ltd. is leading the build, which includes eight two-bedroom flats alongside 16 two- and three-bedroom houses—all designated for social rent. Matthew Crucefix, Stonewater’s Director of Development, highlighted the project’s commitment: “Cherry Grove is a landmark development for Stonewater and shows how sustainable, affordable housing can meet future environmental and community needs today.”

The Cherry Grove site is strategically located near other major housing developments surrounding the industrial estate, including the Keyford Meadows project with 198 homes and commercial spaces on Sandys Hill Lane and additional developments near the B3092 The Mount.

Frome Mayor Andy Jones praised the initiative: “Cherry Grove demonstrates what’s achievable by combining innovation with a strong commitment to sustainability and community needs. Projects like this address urgent affordable housing demands while setting new standards in energy efficiency and environmental stewardship in our town.”

Councillor Sarah Wakefield, Somerset Council’s portfolio holder for adult services and housing, echoed this sentiment: “Cherry Grove reflects Somerset’s dedication to sustainability, energy efficiency, and affordable housing. This project offers quality social rented homes while delivering long-term wellbeing, environmental, and economic benefits for our county and its residents.”
