Worcestershire’s Brett D’Oliveira and Matthew Waite put on a remarkable display of resilience, denying Somerset a victory in a captivating match at Taunton. Despite starting the final day with a challenging target, Worcestershire finished on 485 for nine, led by D’Oliveira’s defiant century and Waite’s unwavering 87 not out. Somerset, who had dominated the match until the final stages, were left frustrated by their opponents' remarkable fightback.
The day began with Worcestershire at 280 for five, still trailing by 236 runs. However, D’Oliveira’s composed 121 off 340 balls and Waite’s gritty 87 off 319 deliveries turned the tide in favor of the visitors. Somerset’s Jack Leach reached a significant milestone by claiming his 500th first-class wicket, but it was not enough to dismantle Worcestershire’s determined resistance.
Despite an early breakthrough by Kasey Aldridge, Worcestershire’s batsmen stood firm, with D’Oliveira reaching his century and guiding his team through a tense final session. Even as Somerset managed to take wickets, the lower order, including Ben Allison, Tom Taylor, and Tom Hinley, contributed to a spirited rearguard action, ultimately denying Somerset the win they had seemed destined for.
