A fundraiser has been launched and heartfelt tributes are pouring in following the tragic death of 22-year-old Abbie Winn from Bridgwater, Somerset. Known to many as a kind-hearted and selfless soul, Abbie reportedly took her own life just days after being discharged from hospital.
Emma Cox, 44, a family friend who knew Abbie from childhood, is organizing a fundraiser in her memory. Emma shared, “All she ever did was try to help people, yet when she needed help the most, no one was there for her.”
Describing Abbie as “sweet, kindhearted, and wonderful,” Emma revealed the young woman’s dedication to supporting others masked the pain she carried inside. “Abbie had no malice in her; she devoted her time to brighten others’ lives, even when she was struggling behind the scenes.”
Abbie’s compassion was evident from an early age. At just 16, she raised funds to support her mother, who was battling terminal pancreatic cancer. At that time, Abbie wrote, “My mum was diagnosed with terminal cancer in late 2018. I want to make sure she can enjoy her remaining time with special days out and holidays as a thank you for all she has done for me.”
Sadly, her mother passed away, followed soon after by her grandparents. Abbie herself faced significant mental health challenges and was hospitalized for treatment shortly before her death.
Emma emphasized the urgent need for mental health support: “Abbie reached out for help and tried to keep going, but life became too much. If you know someone who’s struggling, offer a listening ear or support. More people need to know that life holds hope and joy—just as Abbie would have done for others.”
Abbie is survived by her aunt, who is using fundraiser donations to provide a headstone in Abbie’s honor. Any remaining funds will contribute to a memorial bench in Burnham-on-Sea, a place Abbie treasured for watching sunsets.
The fundraiser has already raised over £1,100 from 75 generous donors, reflecting the community’s desire to remember Abbie’s warmth and kindness.
