Woman Who Survived Cancer Embraces New Purpose by Shaving Her Hair to Fundraise

Jo Booth from Sherborne, a courageous survivor of aggressive Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma, is turning her hair into a powerful symbol of hope and resilience. Having battled the disease since her diagnosis at 30 in 2017, Jo has decided to shave her hair off every four years on her birthday to raise vital funds for cancer research through the Princess Trust.

Jo’s cancer journey began with slow-growing lymphoma treated via low-dose radiotherapy in 2018. However, by 2021, the cancer had become aggressive, requiring intense chemotherapy and a stem cell transplant. Throughout this ordeal, Jo affectionately named her cancer “Gertrude” and documented her experience on Instagram, sharing a heartfelt video of her shaving her hair for charity.

Reflecting on her experience, Jo said, “At the end of 2021, I was terrified I wouldn’t survive. But I made it through the transplant, and I’ve never been the same since.” While she has withdrawn from many social circles, focusing on close friends and work has helped her heal. “Every day my cup starts to get bigger, but progress is slow—and that’s okay.”

For Jo, shaving her hair is much more than a physical act—it is reclaiming control, giving back, and rediscovering purpose. She described losing her long, luscious hair as “losing my power and shine,” but embracing its removal as an empowering choice. “I’m doing this for a good cause, which fills my heart with joy. I’m in control this time and excited to give away my long locks.”

Jo plans to repeat this act every four years, using her hair to fuel fundraising efforts and donate to the Princess Trust. She welcomes support and donations to her GoFundMe, having already raised £1,500 this year alone. Her journey is a powerful reminder that even after trauma, there is strength, hope, and the chance to make a difference.
