Woman Sentenced for Fatal Hit-and-Run of Devoted Grandmother

Jane Hill, 57, from Bridgwater, has been sentenced after pleading guilty to causing death by careless driving in a hit-and-run incident that claimed the life of 85-year-old Jean Bentley in September 2022.

On September 23, 2022, Jean Bentley was walking home when Hill struck her with her vehicle. Rather than stopping immediately, Hill drove away briefly before returning to call for an ambulance. Despite emergency medical efforts, Jean succumbed to her injuries the following day.

Avon and Somerset Police identified Hill as the driver through forensic evidence linking her vehicle to the scene. Hill initially denied involvement but ultimately pleaded guilty at Taunton Crown Court. The court handed down a six-month prison sentence, suspended for two years, a three-year driving ban, and ordered Hill to complete 300 hours of community service.

The presiding judge condemned Hill’s failure to stop and take responsibility, stating she lacked the courage to do the right thing.

In court, Jean’s daughters delivered heartfelt victim impact statements, describing their mother as the cornerstone of their family—a devoted grandmother to five grandchildren and a woman whose kindness and spirit touched many lives. They expressed profound grief over losing her and criticized the prolonged anguish caused by Hill’s initial denial.

Detective Sergeant Angus Moncur emphasized the grave responsibility drivers bear for the safety of others and condemned Hill’s conduct as cowardly and deeply tragic. He expressed relief that justice was served, acknowledging the devastating consequences of negligent driving.
