Woman Dies After Horse Spooked by Motorcyclist Falls; Case Referred for Investigation

Jayne Hunt, 55, tragically lost her life after falling from her horse when it was startled by a motorcyclist near Seend, Wiltshire. The incident occurred on July 9, 2023, on Bollards Hill, where a motorcycle emerged from a blind bend and frightened the horse, causing Jayne to sustain fatal injuries.

Emergency services responded promptly after the accident, shortly before 4 p.m., but despite their efforts, Jayne, a resident of Melksham, Wiltshire, was pronounced dead at the scene. Both her horse and the motorcyclist involved suffered only minor injuries.

An inquest into Jayne’s death was initially scheduled to begin on May 7, but Wiltshire and Swindon Coroner’s Service announced its adjournment under Rule 25(4) of the Coroner’s Inquest Rules 2013. This rule mandates postponement and referral to the Director of Public Prosecutions if the death appears likely to involve a homicide offense that could lead to charges.

Jayne was deeply respected within the equestrian community for her dedication as an equine podiatrist, credited with helping save countless horses' lives. Her family described her as someone who “always loved horses” and was “incredibly well respected” in her field. She will be profoundly missed by her family and vast network of friends.
