Woman Dies After Collision with Van Outside Savers Store in Wiltshire

A tragic accident occurred on a busy shopping street in Wiltshire, resulting in the death of a 79-year-old woman and leaving another woman critically injured. Cheryl Decarteret passed away in hospital on Thursday, October 2, after being struck by a van on Saturday, September 27.

The collision took place around 1.30 pm outside the Savers store on Lowbourne, near the roundabout close to the junction with High Street and Bank Street in Melksham. Another pedestrian, also a woman in her seventies, continues to receive hospital treatment for life-threatening injuries sustained in the crash.

The 25-year-old van driver, arrested following the incident, remains on police bail as the investigation proceeds. Wiltshire Police expressed their condolences to Ms. Decarteret’s family and urged anyone with dashcam or CCTV footage related to the collision to come forward.

The Serious Collision Investigation Team (SCIT) is leading the inquiry. Detective Constable Leigh Mayhew emphasized the importance of public assistance, stating, “Any footage or witness accounts could be crucial in advancing our investigation.”
