Scarlet Nation, a 23-year-old from Dorset, has discovered the perfect way to earn a comfortable income while juggling university studies. What started as a simple side hustle has blossomed into a profitable business that now earns her around £2,500 each month—all through part-time hours.
Facing financial struggles during her time at university, Scarlet knew she needed a quick way to supplement her income. While browsing Facebook Marketplace, she found a £40 bundle containing 120 vintage garments, including pieces from Jane Norman, Charlotte Russe, Aéropostale, Superdry, and Billabong. With her keen fashion sense, she quickly sold a single dress for £10 more than her initial investment on the bundle.
Within just a week, Scarlet had made £2,000 while still holding on to much of her inventory. This success motivated her to expand her reselling efforts. Now, she uses platforms like Vinted and Fleek to source and sell trending vintage styles such as crochet clothing, low-waisted shorts, and branded items from Roxy and Billabong.

Scarlet explained, “Reselling has completely changed things for me. I can cover my rent and living costs without worry, something I couldn’t do on student finance alone. I even cleared my debt within a month through reselling. It’s given me freedom and flexibility to travel, see friends, and focus on my studies.”
Alongside running her business, Scarlet courses through a business and finance degree, saying her practical experience has enhanced her academic knowledge. “Managing my taxes and handling business operations has been invaluable. I spend roughly 20 hours a week on business tasks during less busy times and about 10 hours when exams hit.”
The impact of her side hustle extends beyond her own life. Scarlet has inspired university friends to start reselling as well, sharing tips and strategies. She plans to continue this venture post-graduation and even considers focusing her dissertation on women engaging in side hustles.
Her success has allowed for memorable experiences, including a festive Christmas trip to London with close friends and her boyfriend, all funded by her earnings.
Scarlet’s advice for aspiring resellers is to pay attention to trends, buy bundles to maximize value, and leverage social media for sourcing and promotion. “Accessories perform best in summer, colours really matter, and there’s great potential in buying wholesale bundles,” she noted.
By blending her entrepreneurial spirit with her academic pursuits, Scarlet showcases how determination and creativity can lead to financial independence – all while enjoying the freedom to live life on her own terms.
