Nestled just 1.5 miles from Taunton, The Winchester Arms in the village of Trull stands as more than just a pub—it’s the vibrant heartbeat of the community. Affectionately known as ‘The Winch,’ this cherished establishment has been nominated for Somerset Live’s Pub of the Year Awards, a testament to its enduring charm and dedication to local culture.
Patrick Mahony, the 67-year-old owner and former SE Londoner, has been at the helm for nine years, guiding the pub as a true family business. “The pub is not just a meeting place,” he says. “It’s a key heartbeat in the village, where we look out for our friends, neighbours, and newcomers alike.”
The Winch boasts a strong connection to local brewers, offering an array of real ales and ciders primarily sourced nearby. Their own annual Beer, Cider & Music Festival—held every August across three lively days—is a highlight not just for Trull but for all of Somerset. The festival features an impressive selection of local favorites, including Otter Amber, Sheppy’s Classic Cider, and the pub’s signature Winch Lager, alongside rotating guest ales.

Behind the scenes, the pub thrives due to its dedicated team, many of whom are part of the Simms family, led by Head Chef and Manager Wendy Simms, who has been with The Winch for an impressive 25 years. The kitchen serves homemade dishes that keep patrons coming back, such as tender steaks, suet-crusted pies, lasagnes, and the personal favorite of Patrick’s—salmon with stir-fry noodles in sticky honey sauce.
Though The Winchester Arms maintains an old-fashioned pub atmosphere, it embraces community and celebration with live music events during the summer and the unmissable festival weekend. The pub garden in the village center offers a welcoming spot to unwind and enjoy the lively ambience.
Challenges remain, especially amid rising costs and changing habits since the pandemic, but Patrick emphasizes the importance of supporting local pubs: “If everyone in the village visited just once more a month, it would significantly help keep this vital community hub alive.”
Open seven days a week, The Winchester Arms is more than a place to grab a drink. It’s a cornerstone of village life, fostering friendships, celebrating local flavors, and keeping the spirit of Trull alive for generations to come.
