Wincanton Racecourse Raises Alarm Over Proposed Increase in Betting Duty

The MP for Glastonbury and Somerton recently visited Wincanton Racecourse to voice strong concerns about the government’s proposal to harmonise Remote Betting and Gaming Duty. In a letter to the Chancellor, she warned that the planned increase could threaten the viability of British horseracing, particularly in communities like Wincanton, where racing significantly supports the local economy.

The Treasury’s current consultation aims to replace the existing complex structure of online gambling duties with a single, streamlined remote gambling duty. However, the MP, Ms. Dyke, argues this could disproportionately harm British horseracing. Wincanton Racecourse is a vital economic hub, sustaining numerous jobs and supporting local businesses, while also attracting tourism that benefits the wider region.

She highlighted that raising the betting duty from 15% to 21% would place considerable strain on the industry. The British Horseracing Authority estimates that such harmonisation might lead to a £66 million reduction in revenues, impacting operators’ ability to invest, sponsor events, and promote the sport—thus stunting its growth and visibility.

Ms. Dyke stated, “While tackling problem gambling is essential, doubling the overall Remote Gaming Duty to 42% threatens the future of British horseracing. Institutions like Wincanton Racecourse are more than just sporting venues; they are integral to the social fabric and economic stability of their communities. These proposed changes could have devastating effects locally and nationally.”

She called on the government to conduct and publish a comprehensive impact assessment of the proposed duty changes. Furthermore, she urged clarity on what measures would be put in place to mitigate negative consequences for the racing sector and its supporting economy.
