Wiltshire Police have referred themselves to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) after the discovery of a man’s body in the River Avon early this morning. Emergency services, including underwater search specialists from Avon and Somerset Police and Wiltshire Search and Rescue, responded to reports of a person’s welfare being at risk near Town Bridge in Chippenham at approximately 2:40 a.m. on March 13.
Following a thorough search, the body of a man was recovered from the river. Wiltshire Police confirmed that the deceased’s family has been notified and is receiving support from specially trained officers during this difficult time.
In accordance with protocol, the police force made a mandatory self-referral to the IOPC due to the prior contact between the individual and the police. Wiltshire Police emphasized their commitment to transparency and accountability as the investigation continues.
