Wiltshire Police have taken the unusual step of referring themselves to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) following the recovery of a man’s body from the River Avon near Town Bridge in Chippenham.
At approximately 2:40 a.m. on March 13, emergency services, including specialist underwater search units from Avon and Somerset Police and Wiltshire Search and Rescue teams, were dispatched to the scene after reports raised concerns for an individual’s welfare.
Tragically, a man’s body was recovered from the river. Wiltshire Police confirmed that the deceased’s family have been informed and are receiving support from specially trained officers during this difficult time.

In line with protocol, the police force made a mandatory self-referral to the IOPC, as the incident involved prior police contact. Wiltshire Police emphasized their commitment to transparency and accountability throughout the process.
