Willowdown Primary School Triumphs with Outstanding Ofsted Report

Willowdown Primary School in Bridgwater has made a remarkable turnaround, earning praise in its latest Ofsted report after previously being advised to improve. Now recognized as a place where pupils truly thrive, the school showcases a vibrant, nurturing environment that prioritizes kindness, respect, and aspiration.

The report highlights the school’s welcoming, learning-focused atmosphere where high expectations are set consistently for both pupils and staff. Pupils not only enjoy their lessons but also engage in enriching activities such as caring for the school’s pet chickens during lunchtime, broadening their experiences beyond the classroom.

Inspectors emphasized the school’s warm and predictable environment, noting how a culture of nurture and respect touches every aspect of school life. Positive and respectful relationships between adults and pupils create a safe space where children feel confident raising any concerns.

This glowing endorsement marks significant progress for Willowdown, which previously required improvement in all categories in 2023. The school now meets or exceeds expected standards across all seven Ofsted categories: achievement, attendance and behaviour, curriculum and teaching, leadership and governance, personal development and wellbeing, early years provision, and inclusion.

Inclusion stood out as one of the school’s strongest areas. The inclusion team was commended for building trusting relationships with families, understanding their challenges, and providing valued support.

The report also acknowledged the school’s leadership for overcoming past instability, implementing effective improvement plans, and driving rapid progress. Ambitious leadership ensures all pupils, including those with special educational needs and disabilities, receive appropriate support to succeed. Strong backing from the trust has notably enhanced the wellbeing and behaviour of disadvantaged pupils.

Head teacher Katie Sharp expressed her pride in the collective effort of the school community: “This report celebrates the dedication and commitment of the whole school. Together, we will build on these strengths to ensure our children continue to flourish.”

Gary Schlick, CEO of Futura Learning Partnership, echoed this sentiment, praising the collaborative effort and affirming: “Willowdown has made significant progress, and Ofsted has rightly recognized that the school is in a strong position to continue improving.”
