Will Smeed once again proved his T20 credentials by guiding Somerset to an authoritative eight-wicket win over Essex in their latest Vitality Blast clash, securing two wins from two matches.
Smeed delivered a masterclass innings, smashing 81 runs off just 54 balls, expertly pacing the chase and ensuring Somerset wrapped up the target with 25 balls remaining. His aggressive yet controlled approach dismantled the Essex bowling attack from the outset.

Essex fought hard with half-centuries from Matt Critchley and Dean Elgar, helping their side to recover from a precarious 36 for three at the powerplay’s end. They reached 119 for three by the 14th over with a blend of sharp placement and inventive strokeplay.
However, Elgar’s dismissal triggered a collapse, as Essex lost six wickets for just 29 runs in 35 balls. Ben Green struck decisively, taking three wickets in the over immediately after Elgar’s fall. Tom Lammonby contributed in the field by catching Charlie Allison, Luc Benkenstein, and Simon Harmer, while Lewis Gregory sealed the victory by bowling out Sam Cook, ending Essex’s innings at 148.
Chasing 149, Somerset’s reply was swift and stylish. Smeed set the tone with two boundaries in the opening over, followed by Lammonby’s six over square leg. Smeed skillfully found gaps without taking unnecessary risks, reaching his 13th fifty for Somerset off just 26 balls. He went on to finalize the win with an 81-run knock off 54 balls, demonstrating both power and precision.
