Wild race up cobbled hill returns with bikes, cheers and chaos

After a 13-year break, the Frome Cobble Wobble is back, ready to pit cyclists against gravity, cobbles, and a raucous crowd in one of the UK’s most unique sporting events. Taking place on Sunday, November 23, 2025, this legendary uphill sprint race challenges riders of all ages and abilities to conquer the steep 179-yard climb of Catherine Hill in the heart of Frome, Somerset.

Run by event organizer Andrew Denham, the Cobble Wobble blends intense racing with carnival-like atmosphere. Spectators will line the narrow, cobblestone streets flanked by 17th-century buildings, cheering on cyclists dressed in colorful fancy dress, while elite athletes mix with everyday riders in a celebration of community and competition.

Denham describes the event as “a big silly party stretched out over 179 yards of cobbled hill — with bikes, fancy dress, and the occasional world champion thrown into the mix. It’s quirky and positively life-affirming.”

Since its debut in 2009, the Cobble Wobble quickly grew in popularity, attracting top international cyclists, amateur enthusiasts, and global media attention. After a decade away, the race returns with new categories designed to welcome even more participants.

Highlights for 2025 include an expanded field where the 20 fastest riders overall, plus category winners, will qualify for the night-time finals. Winners will earn the titles of King and Queen of the Cobbles, adding an extra edge to this spirited contest.

Though fun is front and center, past champions have been elite cyclists. Chris Akrigg, a six-time national titleholder, set a blistering winning time of 21.51 seconds in 2010, while world champion Michal Prokop claimed victory in 2012 despite wet conditions.

Spectators play a vital role in the Cobble Wobble experience, enjoying food, drink, live commentary, and prize giveaways. Uniquely, many prizes—including entire bikes—are awarded by random draw, ensuring that winning isn’t everything and everyone has a chance to take home a prize.

“There are no age restrictions, fancy dress is encouraged but not mandatory, and the best part is that everyone’s invited,” says Denham. “We can’t wait!”

The Cobble Wobble has inspired similar events around the world, including Germany’s Cobble Hoppel and the Red Bull Hill Chasers, underscoring its influence on quirky, high-energy cycling races.

Entries are open until midnight on Thursday, November 20. Riders can find all the details and entry forms at www.thecobblewobble.co.uk.
