Wetherspoon has officially entered Clevedon’s pub scene with the acquisition of The Salthouse, a beloved venue renowned for its exceptional views over the seafront and the iconic Victorian pier.
Situated near Salthouse Fields and the well-known marine pool, The Salthouse boasts a Grade II listed building dating back to the 1800s and is believed to be the oldest pub in Clevedon. Its beer garden offers customers a picturesque setting overlooking the Bristol Channel.
The current long-standing landlords, Gary and Andrea Searle, confirmed last week that the pub has been sold to Wetherspoon. Despite having made an offer to purchase the premises, they were outbid. Nevertheless, they emphasised they intend to remain as operators for the foreseeable future, as their lease remains valid for several years.

In a heartfelt statement shared on social media, Gary and Andrea said: “To all of our customers and friends, unfortunately we didn’t get the chance to buy The Salthouse. We put in our offer, but it was beaten by a higher one beyond our control. Although we believed we had the opportunity to purchase the building, this was not the case.
“We still hold the lease and will continue running The Salthouse until we decide it’s our time to leave. Just because the pub has been sold does not mean Wetherspoon will be taking over anytime soon.
“We really didn’t want this to happen, as we know the impact it could have on other local businesses, but the decision was ultimately out of our hands. We love every single customer and fellow business in Clevedon. Thank you for your continued support, and please remember to support local.”
The announcement prompted a wave of support from regular patrons, many pledging to continue their loyalty while the current team remains. Comments reflected a mixture of concern and appreciation for the existing staff and their efforts.
A Wetherspoon spokesperson confirmed the purchase but clarified that no operational changes will occur until the existing lease expires in 2033. They declined to comment on plans beyond that date.
This development follows last year’s announcement by Savills estate agents that 23 free-of-tie pubs owned by the Stonegate Group, including The Salthouse, were being marketed for sale.
Although Clevedon is now set to have a Wetherspoon pub, it has not yet appeared on the chain’s official location finder. At present, the nearest Wetherspoons are The Glassmaker in Nailsea and The Posset Cup in Portishead.
