Wetherspoon has officially entered the Clevedon pub scene following its acquisition of The Salthouse, a cherished local establishment renowned for its stunning views. The Salthouse’s beer garden offers patrons sweeping sights of the seafront and the historic Victorian pier, situated near the popular Salthouse Fields and marine pool. Housed in a Grade II listed building dating back to the 1800s, it is believed to be Clevedon’s oldest pub.
Long-standing landlords Gary and Andrea Searle, who have managed The Salthouse for several years, confirmed the sale last week. They revealed that they had hoped to purchase the property themselves but were outbid. Despite the change in ownership, the Searles emphasised that they will remain as landlords for years to come, as their lease runs until 2033.
In a heartfelt Facebook statement, the couple addressed their customers and the wider community: “Unfortunately, we didn’t get the chance to buy The Salthouse. We put in our offer but it was beaten by a higher one beyond our control. We believed we had the final say to purchase the building but it wasn’t to be.”

They reassured supporters by adding, “We still hold the lease and will continue running The Salthouse until the time comes for us to leave. The sale does not mean Wetherspoon will be taking over anytime soon.”
Acknowledging potential concerns, they wrote, “We did not want this outcome, aware of possible impacts on local businesses, but the decision was not ours. We love every customer and business in Clevedon. Thank you for your continued support; please keep supporting local.”
The announcement sparked an outpouring of support from regulars, many pledging loyalty to the current landlords. One commented, “So sorry to hear this. I will continue to enjoy my pint in the Salty while it stays as it is. I am unlikely to support Wetherspoons.”
Another said, “Sorry you didn’t get to buy it. We love the food and the staff team are great. We will keep coming as long as you are here and hope that is a long time.”
A spokesperson for Wetherspoon confirmed the purchase to Somerset Live, stating: “We can confirm Wetherspoon has acquired the site. There will be no changes until the lease expires in 2033. We will not comment on plans beyond that date at this time.”
This development follows a 2023 announcement by estate agents Savills, who marketed 23 free-of-tie pub investments for the Stonegate Group, among which The Salthouse was listed.
Currently, The Salthouse is not featured on Wetherspoon’s location finder. Clevedon residents seeking the chain’s offerings are directed to The Glassmaker in Nailsea or The Posset Cup in Portishead, the nearest branches.
