Weston’s Marine Lake Reopens Ahead of Bank Holiday Heatwave

Weston-super-Mare’s beloved marine lake has reopened just in time for the sunniest Bank Holiday weekend of the year. After being closed since October for major refurbishment work, the iconic saltwater lake is once again ready to welcome swimmers, walkers, and visitors alike.

On Friday, May 22, Dan Thomas, Deputy Chair of North Somerset Council, officially cut the ribbon to mark the reopening. The timing couldn’t be better, with schools breaking up for half term and a heatwave set to sweep across the country.

The extensive improvements led by North Somerset Council’s Mike Solomon have revitalised one of Weston’s most treasured attractions. “Whether you’re swimming, enjoying watersports, taking a stroll around the lake on the newly resurfaced walkway, or simply relaxing with an ice cream and a view, Marine Lake is a unique treasure for both residents and visitors,” said Solomon.

Council contractors have replaced and resurfaced the lakeside path, rebuilt steps and ramps, upgraded public restrooms, and added a new equipment hire facility. Additionally, the Marine Lake Mudlarks have deepened a channel to enhance swimming conditions. A striking new orange entrance sign now proudly announces the lake’s presence from afar. Solomon commented, “It’s visible from down by the pier—and I wouldn’t be surprised if you could see it from space!”

Among the first to celebrate the reopening was Weston-super-Mare MP Dan Aldridge, who took a dip wearing colorful shorts and a Dismaland t-shirt. Aldridge expressed his delight, highlighting that government funding was instrumental in making the refurbishment possible. “For years, my family and I have cherished the marine lake. It’s fantastic to see it revitalised and looking incredible. The people of Weston deserve good things, and this is certainly one of them.”

The marine lake, constructed in 1929 to harness the town’s second highest tidal range in the world, allows for safe seawater swimming regardless of the tide. It is thought to be the largest facility of its kind globally.

This project is part of a wider investment powered by government funds from the Levelling Up Fund secured in 2023. Alongside the marine lake restoration, this funding supports improvements to historic shopfronts, Grove Park, and ongoing works at Birnbeck Pier and the Tropicana.

Speaking before the ribbon-cutting ceremony, Mike Solomon said, “Today marks not just the reopening of the lake but a renewed commitment to Weston-super-Mare’s vibrant future. With the lake open and a full calendar of events planned, we’re set for an exciting, busy, and sunny summer ahead.”
