Work has officially commenced to transform Weston-super-Mare’s beloved Tropicana into a “nationally significant” destination for culture, arts, and entertainment. Following a successful bid for Levelling Up funding in 2023, North Somerset Council has launched a major renovation project aimed at revitalizing the former lido turned event space.
Contractors Morgan Sindall have begun the initial stage of stripping out the interior of the 1980s building. This preparatory work will lead to the full demolition of the existing event space in November, making way for a brand-new 1,000-seat indoor venue. The redevelopment plans include restoring the iconic 1930s facade, expanding outdoor capacity, and enhancing the building’s environmental sustainability through heat pumps and solar panels.
Cllr Mike Solomon, North Somerset Council’s cabinet member overseeing the project, expressed enthusiasm about the progress: “The Tropicana is a cherished landmark on Weston’s seafront. This project represents a major investment that will benefit the local economy, residents, and the wider region. It will attract inward investment and bring new opportunities for culture and entertainment.”

The council is also in the process of securing an experienced venue operator to manage the Tropicana for at least two decades. While the operator’s identity remains confidential due to legal and commercial reasons, an official announcement is anticipated soon.
Set to be completed by the end of 2026, the upgraded Tropicana will reopen shortly after the venue operator completes their fit-out. Since closing as a swimming pool in 2000, the Tropicana has served various roles, including hosting Banksy’s 2015 Dismaland, and has functioned as an event space attracting 40,000 to 50,000 visitors annually. However, the building’s aging infrastructure poses operational challenges and high maintenance costs.
The renovation will provide modern indoor and outdoor entertainment areas designed for diverse events. Environmental upgrades are a key feature, aiming to reduce the venue’s carbon footprint and address the climate emergency.
Despite strong local and regional support, the project has faced some criticism, particularly regarding the design of the new construction. Early plans described by some as “brutalist” and reminiscent of a “1980s warehouse” prompted revisions following feedback from the design review panel. Changes included reducing the building’s height and switching from a bright white facade to a subtler mottled grey finish. In May, the council approved the revised plans with a 9-3 vote.
Funding for the project includes £11.94 million from the £20 million Levelling Up Fund awarded to North Somerset Council, supplemented by £2.7 million from Arts Council England. The council confirms that this funding is strictly allocated for the Tropicana redevelopment and cannot be redirected to other services such as social care or infrastructure.
The regeneration of the Tropicana promises to reinvigorate Weston-super-Mare’s cultural scene, positioning the town as a significant hub for arts and entertainment on a national scale.
