Weston-super-Mare’s pursuit of promotion from the National League South came to a disappointing end following a 2-0 defeat against Hornchurch in their play-off semi-final on Saturday, reports Keith Watson.
After advancing past Hemel Hempstead in a tense midweek quarter-final decided by penalties, the Seagulls faced a tough challenge in east London. Hornchurch dominated much of the first half, but Weston’s goalkeeper Max Harris made several crucial saves to keep the score level at halftime.
The deadlock was broken six minutes into the second half when Hornchurch’s seasoned midfielder Josh Rees cleverly found space and finished clinically. Harris thwarted Rees’s attempt at a second goal, but the hosts extended their lead ten minutes later. Henry Sandat capitalized on a slick pass from Angelo Balanta to double Hornchurch’s advantage.

Weston responded as Scot Bennett, Will Dawes, and Louis Britton fought to claw their way back into the match. However, they were unable to penetrate Hornchurch’s defense, which held firm until the final whistle.
Hornchurch will now face Torquay in the National League play-off final, battling for a coveted spot in the National League next season. Meanwhile, the National League North final is set to feature South Shields and Kidderminster.
