Weston-super-Mare’s Marine Lake Reopens Just in Time for Bank Holiday Heatwave

Weston-super-Mare’s iconic marine lake has reopened just ahead of the sunniest bank holiday weekend of the year, offering residents and visitors a perfect spot to cool off and enjoy the summer weather. Closed since October for major renovations, the free-to-use saltwater lake was officially reopened on Friday, May 22, when North Somerset Council’s deputy chair Dan Thomas cut the ribbon. The reopening coincides with schools breaking up for half term and a much-anticipated heatwave across the country.

Mike Solomon of North Somerset Council, who led the refurbishment project, expressed his enthusiasm for the lake’s renewed appeal. “Marine Lake is one of Weston seafront’s best assets, whether you’re swimming, watersports, taking a stroll on the new path, or simply soaking in the view with an ice cream,” he said. “It’s a truly special place for both residents and visitors.”

The extensive improvements include repaired and resurfaced walkways encircling the lake, rebuilt steps and ramps for easier access, upgraded public toilets, and a brand-new equipment hire facility. Additionally, the Marine Lake Mudlarks created a deep-water channel to enhance the swimming experience.

A bold new orange sign now marks the entrance, visible from the pier and beyond. Solomon commented, “It’s fantastic— you can even see it from space! It’s already serving as a striking landmark.”

Among those celebrating the reopening was Weston-super-Mare MP Dan Aldridge, who joined others for a paddle in the lake. Wearing colorful shorts and a Dismaland t-shirt, he said, “For years, my family and I have enjoyed the marine lake. It’s great to see it refitted and looking amazing. The UK Government’s funding has made this possible.” Aldridge added, “The people of Weston deserve good things, and this is a very good thing.”

The marine lake, constructed in 1929 to capture high tides behind a wall, allows for safe swimming at all tide levels. It’s believed to be the largest facility of its kind worldwide, situated in an area with the second highest tidal range on the planet.

This restoration is just one of several projects supported by government Levelling Up Fund money awarded to the council in 2023. The funding has also helped improve high street shopfronts, Grove Park, and partially supports work on Birnbeck Pier and the Tropicana.

In his reopening speech, Solomon stressed the broader significance of the lake’s revival: “Today is about more than just reopening the lake. It’s about investing in Weston-super-Mare’s future. With the lake welcoming visitors again and a packed summer events calendar ahead, we’re set for an exciting and sunny season in Weston.”
