Weston-super-Mare’s iconic Silica landmark, a towering 30-metre illuminated structure since 2006, has been transformed into a vibrant, interactive community hub. This refreshed landmark aims to connect both visitors and residents with an easily accessible source of local information at the touch of a button.
The Silica’s complete makeover includes the addition of innovative touchscreens offering real-time event listings, details on local charities and community initiatives, plus a searchable directory of shops and services complete with directions. This revitalisation project is a joint effort led by Visit Weston-super-Mare, North Somerset Council, and Weston-super-Mare Town Council.
Weston-based artist Nick Roberts, known for his distinctive and colourful style, created the visual centerpiece that captures the town’s lively and creative spirit, adding an artistic flair to the landmark’s modern functionality.

Paul Batts, owner of Outdoors & Active and Chair of Weston’s Business Improvement District, said, “The Silica will be a major boost for our high street businesses. It makes it easier for locals and visitors alike to discover what’s available and even sends them straight to our shop doors.”
Councillor Simon Harrison-Morse, Chair of Amenities, Culture & Leisure at Weston-super-Mare Town Council, expressed enthusiasm about the project, stating, “Finally, we have a platform to celebrate the amazing people who work tirelessly to make great things happen in our town.”
Cllr. Mark Canniford, Cabinet Member for Sustainable Places and Service Transformation at North Somerset Council, highlighted the landmark’s renewed role, commenting, “The Silica is an important visual symbol of our town. This collaboration has not only refreshed the landmark and its surroundings but will also enhance visitor and community engagement.”
To further support the local culture and economy, event organisers are invited to submit their event listings free of charge. Whether hosting live music, art exhibitions, workshops, or wellbeing sessions, they can email their details to [email protected].
The official unveiling of the revamped Silica will take place at 2 pm on Tuesday, June 24, hosted by the Mayor of Weston-super-Mare, marking a new chapter in this landmark’s storied history.
