Weston-super-Mare’s Historic Indoor Market to Close After 35 Years

Weston Indoor Market, a staple of Weston-super-Mare’s High Street since 1988, will close its doors permanently next month. After more than three decades of serving both locals and tourists, the market’s final day of trading will be Saturday, April 25.

Recognized as the longest-running market in Weston-super-Mare, the market has been a nurturing ground for countless traders. Many started with a single stall and grew their ventures into successful businesses—a testament to the market’s role in supporting local enterprise.

In a heartfelt message on Facebook, a market spokesperson expressed gratitude: “Since opening in 1988, we have been proud to support a huge number of traders. To all our customers and followers who have shopped with us over the years – thank you. It’s been a great run.”

In anticipation of the closure, changes to opening hours have been implemented from March 30, with the market operating from 10am to 4pm and remaining closed on Sundays.

News of the market’s closure has stirred sadness within the community. Visitors reminisced about the memories the market unlocked. One commented, “I am so sad, this little market unlocks core memories for me from my times when I used to visit Weston as a kid. Thank you for being that for so many people.” Others lamented the loss, offering best wishes to the traders for their future endeavors.

Businesses housed within the market have shared their plans following the announcement. JD3DP, a local 3D-printing enterprise, emphasized that “this is not the end,” stating they aim to trade until the final day and are exploring future opportunities.

Similarly, Blissful Wellness Treats reassured customers they are seeking a new location and will continue trading at other local markets, including the Weston Independent Market on Wednesdays, along with online sales.

Jolliff Sewing & Embroidery expressed disappointment, reflecting on the nearly 620 orders fulfilled within a year and the friendships formed. The owner conveyed gratitude to loyal customers and hope for continued service despite the uncertain future.

Though the market is closing an important chapter for Weston-super-Mare, the spirit of its traders and the community it fostered will carry forward into new ventures.
