Weston-super-Mare’s Grand Pier: A Seaside Attraction Outshining Blackpool and Brighton

When picturing an authentic British pier, destinations like Blackpool or Brighton often come to mind. However, one of the UK’s most remarkable piers is nestled in the South West—Weston-super-Mare’s Grand Pier along the Bristol Channel in North Somerset.

Having undergone extensive upgrades, the Grand Pier has successfully preserved its historic charm while evolving into a premier seaside attraction. Since its original opening in 1904, this iconic pier has transformed from a simple observation deck into a vibrant entertainment hub, catering to families with an impressive array of activities housed within a spacious indoor complex.

Despite setbacks, including devastating fires in 1930 and 2008, the pier has persevered. The 2008 blaze prompted a comprehensive rebuild, culminating in a modern facility that opened to the public in October 2010. Today, the Grand Pier melds tradition with innovation, offering the classic treats—sea rock, fish and chips, and beloved 2p arcade machines—alongside thrilling rides and attractions.

Visitors delight in multiple floors of fun, featuring glow-in-the-dark go-karts, mini golf, a house of horrors, dodgems, a free-fall ride, and the exhilarating sidewinder attraction. The spectacular sea views provide a stunning backdrop to a day filled with entertainment and nostalgia.

Families praise the value and variety the pier offers. One guest shared, “We spent pretty much the whole day there and could easily go again the next day… Absolutely great day out at a beautiful venue. Wristbands are great value for money, and so much is included. 100% recommend—great destination. We will be back!”

Entry costs just £2 per person, with options to pre-book tickets for convenience and savings. While some rides and attractions require separate fees, the Grand Pier’s multiple dining spots allow visitors to enjoy everything from traditional fish and chips to indulgent doughnuts and ice cream without leaving the site.

In addition to the Grand Pier, Weston-super-Mare is home to the historic Birnbeck Pier. Opened in 1867, this listed building has been closed since 1994 and currently stands in a state of disrepair. Restoration efforts aim for a 2027 reopening, which would add another unique jewel to Weston’s coastline as Britain’s only pier linking to an island.

Weston-super-Mare’s Grand Pier proves that it can rival—and even surpass—well-known seaside resorts, offering a blend of rich history, comprehensive family entertainment, and quintessential British seaside experiences.
