Weston-super-Mare’s Grand Pier: A Seaside Attraction Outshining Blackpool and Brighton

When it comes to classic British piers, Blackpool and Brighton often dominate the conversation. However, Weston-super-Mare in North Somerset quietly boasts one of the UK’s finest pier experiences at its iconic Grand Pier.

Situated along the Bristol Channel, this seaside resort has transformed the Grand Pier into a vibrant hub of family entertainment while preserving its historical charm. Originally opening in 1904, the Grand Pier has earned listed building status, symbolizing over a century of seaside tradition in Weston-super-Mare.

Though it has faced adversity—twice devastated by fires in 1930 and again in 2008—the pier was fully rebuilt following the 2008 blaze. Reopening in 2010, the new pavilion blends heritage with modern attractions, creating an indoor venue filled with excitement for all ages.

Today’s Grand Pier offers much more than traditional seaside fare like rock candy and classic fish and chips. Families can enjoy a host of activities spread across two levels, complete with stunning coastal views.

Indoor highlights include a haunted house, glow-in-the-dark go-karts, mini golf, dodgems, a sidewinder ride, and an exhilarating free fall ride. Visitors have praised the experience, commending the excellent value of wristband packages that offer unlimited access to rides and attractions.

Entry is affordable at just £2 per person, with the option to book tickets online to skip the queues. While entrance is inexpensive, visitors should expect to spend separately on individual games and refreshments available throughout the pier.

The Grand Pier’s multiple cafés cater to every craving, offering everything from classic fish and chips to sweet doughnuts and refreshing ice cream—a perfect complement to a day by the sea.

Guests frequently remark on the thoughtful investment and variety of entertainment that makes the Grand Pier a standout destination. One visitor shared, “We spent almost the whole day here and could easily return — so much to do for all ages, and the beautiful venue adds to the experience.”

While Weston-super-Mare has a second pier—Birnbeck Pier—it remains closed and under restoration. Once reopened, it is expected to enhance the town’s coastal appeal further as Britain’s only pier connected to an island.

For now, the Grand Pier remains the crown jewel of Weston-super-Mare’s seaside offerings, providing a vibrant and affordable alternative to better-known piers in Blackpool and Brighton.
