The Weston-super-Mare Summer Fest at the Beach faced significant disruption over the weekend of June 6-7, as severe weather and organizational missteps left festival-goers frustrated and demanding refunds. Heavy rain and strong winds caused safety concerns, leading to partial evacuations, cancellations, and confusion over the event’s schedule.
Despite impressive line-ups featuring acts like Craig David, Dizzee Rascal, and Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Saturday’s storm forced the closure of parts of the site, including the VIP marquee. Attendees reported being confined within the VIP area for hours without access to basic amenities such as toilets, food, and drinks, fueling complaints about the premium experience they paid for. Organisers insisted these measures prioritized public safety under rapidly changing and dangerous conditions.
Communication breakdowns further exacerbated tensions. Some ticket-holders were told upon arrival that the event had been cancelled, only to later learn it had continued after delays. One individual revealed they were denied entry and advised they were ineligible for refunds. Organisers attributed this misinformation to a security staff member who was not authorized to provide such declarations, with the matter now under internal review.

Compounding confusion, headline performer Sophie Ellis-Bextor was prevented from taking the stage due to safety concerns, prompting a public apology citing the closure of her stage at the last minute. Additionally, The Feeling, prominently advertised in advance, did not perform and stated they were never officially booked, blaming the festival for poor communication after withdrawing at short notice.
Security personnel faced criticism amid reports of forceful interventions and crowd tensions. Although the organisers and the security company denied any assaults or formal complaints, concerns remain among attendees.
Despite weather challenges and organizational flaws, many praised the event’s ambition and entertainment value — with Gok Wan’s energetic DJ set notably boosting spirits amid adverse conditions. Festival Director Ian Rodgers acknowledged the difficulties but highlighted the crowd’s resilience and enjoyment amid these obstacles.
Summer Fest organisers have expressed gratitude to artists, staff, and attendees, affirming their commitment to learning from this inaugural year’s challenges. They emphasize that safety was paramount throughout and promise improvements to ensure future editions run more smoothly, building on the event’s successes.
