Weston-super-Mare Summer Fest Faces Refund Demands Amid Storm Chaos and Line-Up Mix-Up

Angry festival-goers at Weston-super-Mare’s Summer Fest at the Beach have voiced strong demands for refunds following a chaotic weekend marked by severe weather and organizational confusion.

The event, held over June 6-7, showcased prominent music acts along the Somerset seafront but was severely disrupted on Saturday due to heavy rain and powerful winds. Safety concerns led to the evacuation of parts of the VIP area, performance cancellations, and frustrated attendees feeling misled and trapped.

While many recognized that the unpredictable weather was beyond the organizers’ control, criticism focused heavily on their handling of the situation. Complaints emerged about poor communication, with some ticket-holders initially told the event was canceled only to find it proceeded later, causing confusion and frustration. Several VIP guests reported being confined to their section without access to toilets or refreshments, despite paying premium prices.

Festival organizers maintained that all decisions prioritized safety, asserting that measures were taken in response to ongoing weather assessments. However, confusion at entry points was attributed to security staff delivering unauthorized information about cancellations and refunds, a matter now under internal review.

Notably, Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s scheduled Saturday performance was canceled due to wind making the stage unsafe. The artist expressed disappointment on social media, emphasizing that the cancellation was beyond her control.

Adding to the lineup issues, the band The Feeling publicly denied ever being booked, despite appearing in promotional materials for Sunday’s slot. Organizers explained they were informed of the band’s withdrawal shortly before the event but failed to update the website in time, apologizing for the mix-up.

Social media channels for the festival have disabled comments likely to stem negativity, but numerous critical reviews flooded the event’s Facebook page, with attendees describing the day as “pure chaos” and “frightening.”

Despite the setbacks, several performers, including Craig David, Dizzee Rascal, Five, Sister Sledge, Madness, and DJ Gok Wan, received praise for bringing energy and entertainment to the drenched but resilient crowd.

Festival Director Ian Rodgers acknowledged the challenging conditions and highlighted the efforts to adapt the site and ensure safety. In communications, organizers expressed pride in launching a large-scale event bringing major artists to Weston-super-Mare and pledged to learn from the experiences to improve future editions.

With a mix of admiration for the festival’s ambition and frustration over operational missteps, the weekend remains a difficult but formative moment for Summer Fest at the Beach.
