Weston-super-Mare Police Investigate Harmful Vape After Child Hospitalised

Police in Weston-super-Mare have issued a warning about the serious health risks associated with vapes following the hospitalisation of an 11-year-old boy in the town centre. The boy’s family remains deeply shaken after the medical emergency, which unfolded on Tuesday, April 7.

Avon and Somerset Police confirmed that a teenager has been arrested in connection with the incident and a vape device recovered has been sent for forensic testing. While authorities have not confirmed the child used the vape, they are actively investigating the circumstances.

The emergency occurred at The Italian Gardens plaza around 3:42 pm when CCTV operators alerted first responders to the boy falling ill. Local street wardens and community officers provided immediate aid until paramedics arrived. The boy was treated with naloxone, a medication typically used to counteract opioid overdoses, before being rushed to hospital. He has since been discharged and continues his recovery at home under family support.

Inspector Lee Kerslake expressed concern about the impact on the local community. He emphasised the ongoing inquiry efforts and reassured that the family is being updated regularly. Inspector Kerslake also highlighted the police partnership with local authorities to crack down on illegal vapes, which pose significant health dangers.

Weston-super-Mare MP Dan Aldridge voiced his deep concern over the incident, praising the swift and decisive actions of emergency teams, including the life-saving use of naloxone. He stressed this was not an isolated event and called for stronger powers for law enforcement to tackle the sale of illicit and dangerous vaping products. Mr Aldridge has raised these issues directly with government ministers to enhance police capabilities and protect the community from similar threats.

Police urge anyone with information regarding the incident or the illegal sale of vapes to contact them at 101, referencing log number 5226094766. Reports can also be made through the police website, helping authorities safeguard public health and safety.
