Weston-super-Mare Offers Free Shop Unit to Boost Town Centre

North Somerset Council is offering a retail unit at The Sovereign in Weston-super-Mare with a year’s free rent, aiming to inject new life into the town centre. Entrepreneurs will compete by presenting their business ideas in a Dragon’s Den-style event this December, with the winner set to take over the unit in March 2027.

Council Leader Mike Bell emphasised the opportunity saying, “This is a great chance for a local entrepreneur to make their mark on the high street. We want something engaging that brings the community together and helps promote Weston beyond just the seafront.”

He added that citizens are keen to see the high street flourish again, so it is vital to find new ways to support small businesses to innovate and energise the town. “Weston-super-Mare has considerable potential, and I look forward to the exciting business proposals that come forward,” Mr Bell said.

Like many UK towns, Weston-super-Mare’s high street has faced challenges. Earlier this year, Weston Indoor Market shut its doors after more than 30 years.

Labour MP Dan Aldridge, also judging the competition, highlighted local enthusiasm for more independent shops. He explained, “Earlier this year, I held workshops with 40 residents discussing the town’s future. A clear message was the desire for more independent businesses that meet community needs.”

He continued, “This competition could be a game-changer for an entrepreneur, turning a great idea into a reality by providing a year of free rent.”

Alan Smith, Centre Manager of The Sovereign, expressed excitement about hosting a new shop. “Welcoming a new business here and supporting its growth will help steer Weston-super-Mare’s high street in a positive direction. These are promising times ahead.”

Applications for the competition are open to anyone with a business idea, whether new or existing, provided they do not already occupy a physical retail space. The deadline to apply is Monday, 30 November. The winner will enjoy 12 months of rent-free occupation and service charges but will be responsible for business rates from March 2027.
