Weston-super-Mare’s local MP, Dan Aldridge, has kicked off a tasty competition to find the best fish and chip shop in town ahead of National Fish and Chip Day on Friday, June 6. This exciting contest invites residents and visitors alike to nominate their favourite local chippy for the coveted title of “People’s Choice Award: Weston’s Favourite Fish and Chip Shop 2025.”
The winning establishment will receive a commemorative certificate and the pride of recognition from the town and its Member of Parliament. Aldridge expressed his enthusiasm for the event, saying, “Fish and chips are a cherished part of our national identity, and here in Weston, we are fortunate to have some of the finest chippies in the country. I’m eager to see which local shops the community believes deserve the crown this year.”
Fish and chips hold a fascinating place in British culinary history. The tradition of fried fish was popularised in London’s East End by the Jewish community, with the first known fish and chip shop opening in the capital around 1860. The origin of chips is debated, with some attributing them to Yorkshire and others to Lancashire. Combining these two elements created a beloved dish that quickly became a British staple.
