Weston-super-Mare suffered a setback in the National League South play-off chase after a 3-0 defeat to Torquay United on Good Friday, witnessed by an enthusiastic crowd of 2,662 at the Optima Stadium. The loss sees Weston drop to 11th in the standings, though they remain just four points shy of fourth-placed Torquay with five games remaining, beginning with a match at Salisbury on Monday.
Torquay took an early lead in the 15th minute through Matt Worthington, who expertly curled a shot with the outside of his boot from the edge of the penalty area. Weston responded with chances from Jacob Jagger-Cane and Ollie Dewsbury but were unable to find the back of the net. Torquay sealed their victory late on with two quick goals from Louis Dennis in the 83rd and 86th minutes.
Despite the scoreline, Weston’s goalkeeper Charlie Binns delivered a standout performance, making several critical saves that kept the deficit down. From as early as the fourth minute, Binns showed his sharp reflexes, clearing a deflected cross for a corner.

Torquay threatened early but Weston began to find their rhythm in the latter part of the first half. Jaiden Putman’s promising cross at the 29th minute was confidently gathered by Torquay keeper Will Henry, and Joe Raynes tested Henry with a long-range strike before the half ended.
The second half was more balanced, but Torquay maintained the upper hand offensively. Weston’s appeals for a penalty were dismissed after Caine Bradbury went down under a challenge from Putman. Both teams pushed hard for a breakthrough, with Weston’s Donovan Wilson hitting the post and being denied twice more by Henry.
With just five matches left in the season, Weston-super-Mare remain in the fight for the play-offs but will need to improve their finishing and maintain defensive resilience to climb the table.
