Weston-super-Mare Celebrate Unbeaten Season with Promotion and Title Victory

Weston-super-Mare capped an extraordinary season by maintaining their unbeaten streak and clinching the Regional 2 Tribute Ale South West championship with a decisive win over Okehampton. This victory not only guaranteed promotion but also celebrated the club’s 150th anniversary in style.

Heading into the match, Weston held a comfortable lead over second-placed Tiverton, who trailed by 19 points but had a game in hand. With just two points needed from the encounter, Weston aimed to secure their first promotion since the 2016/17 season.

The game unfolded under bright sunshine before a lively crowd that included spirited traveling supporters. Both teams were determined, especially as Okehampton looked to disrupt Weston’s flawless run after a challenging reverse fixture.

A poignant moment preceded kickoff—a minute’s silence was observed to honor the late Matt Salter, a respected figure who contributed significantly to Bristol Rugby and later Clifton as director of rugby.

Weston quickly demonstrated their superiority, earning early penalties and converting pressure into points. Prop Ieuan John opened the scoring with a try from a driving lineout. Okehampton responded swiftly with a brilliant try initiated by captain Tom McGratton’s clever kick and finished by Brandon Horn.

Despite Okehampton’s spirited efforts, frequent penalties hampered their momentum. Weston’s No. 8 Nasili Ikahihifo powered through the defense for two tries, both successfully converted by fly-half George Nuttycombe. Okehampton managed to narrow the gap as Leon Horn made an impressive solo run, but Weston’s cohesive play led to continued scoring opportunities, including a try by Keanu Ballard supported by Nuttycombe’s reliable conversions.

The first half ended with Weston leading 26-10, having also secured a bonus point for tries. However, the second half saw Okehampton intensify their efforts, applying pressure and creating chances that Weston’s defense staunchly repelled.

Ikahihifo was again pivotal, completing a hat-trick after a strong team effort created space for their tries. Despite a yellow card for Okehampton’s Mikey Stevens and a near interception try prevented by Ballard’s exceptional tackle, Weston held firm.

Further substitutions occurred as Weston managed minor injuries, with players like Mason Turner and Cameron Maslen entering the fray. Ikahihifo then sealed his remarkable performance with a fourth try, again converted by Nuttycombe.

Okehampton fought valiantly until the final whistle, but Weston’s disciplined play and relentless pressure secured a 38-17 victory. Ikahihifo earned Man of the Match honors, finishing the season with 12 tries in 17 appearances.

With this bonus-point triumph, Weston amassed 100 league points, ensuring promotion to Regional 1 Tribute South West for the 2026/27 season. The club aims to maintain their perfect record in their remaining games, including an upcoming match against Tiverton and a final home fixture against Crediton, where celebrations will continue.
