Weston-super-Mare Boosts Play-Off Hopes with Wins as Bath City Salvages Draw

Weston-super-Mare has reignited their National League South play-off aspirations with two impressive victories in just four days. Following a narrow 1-0 win against AFC Totton on Tuesday night, Weston secured a commanding 2-0 victory over Hampton & Richmond at the Optima Stadium.

Early in the match, Weston created several chances with Scott Bennett heading a Luke Coulson free-kick over the crossbar and Ollie Dewsbury narrowly missing with a header. The breakthrough came in the 27th minute when Louis Britton expertly finished a low cross from Will Dawes to put Weston ahead.

In the second half, Luke Spokes nearly extended the lead with a well-struck half-volley that was tipped over the crossbar. Ollie Dewsbury made no mistake on the 71st minute, capitalizing on a pass from Coulson to double Weston’s advantage.

Meanwhile, at Twerton Park, Bath City fought back from a two-goal deficit to earn a hard-fought point against high-flying Hornchurch in their National League South encounter. Henry Sandat had given Hornchurch a comfortable lead with a brace before being shown a straight red card between the goals scored by Scott Wilson and Jack Batten, which shifted the momentum in Bath’s favor.

Hornchurch showcased their title credentials early, overcoming Bath’s defensive resistance with Sandat’s smart finish in the 11th minute and a curling shot in first-half stoppage time to make it 2-0. Despite Bath’s increased efforts, they struggled to make an impact against Hornchurch’s defense in the first half.

Bath’s persistence paid off in the second half when a precise ball from Batten allowed Reubin Sheppard to lob the goalkeeper, setting up Scott Wilson for a goal-line finish in the 58th minute. Then, after Sandat’s red card in the 67th minute following an off-the-ball incident, Bath capitalized on their numerical advantage.

Within five minutes, Bath leveled the score as Kieran Parselle’s headed clearance was met by Batten, who scored from close range. Bath continued to pressure Hornchurch throughout the remainder of the match and into 10 minutes of stoppage time but were unable to find a winning goal.

The resilient performance by Bath City highlights the grit they will need to maintain their National League South status in the weeks ahead, while Weston-super-Mare’s recent victories provide a significant boost to their play-off ambitions.
