Weston-super-Mare Aims to Extend Historic FA Cup Run at Grimsby

Weston-super-Mare have already etched their name into FA Cup history by reaching the third round for the first time in their 139-year existence. Now, buoyed by that milestone, the Seagulls set their sights higher as they prepare to face Grimsby Town in the fourth round qualifier on Saturday.

The club’s journey to this stage was propelled by Louis Britton’s impressive brace in the second round, which secured a triumph over Chelmsford City and set up the enticing clash with League Two’s Grimsby Town.

While not the glamorous tie Weston-super-Mare might have dreamed of, facing Grimsby represents one of the more favorable away challenges the National League South side could have drawn. Grimsby Town, currently sitting 12th in League Two under David Artell, head into the match following back-to-back wins. Their recent 4-0 victory against Wealdstone in round two adds to their momentum. Having famously knocked Manchester United out of the EFL Cup on penalties, Grimsby will be determined to avoid being the next giant on the chopping block.

Weston-super-Mare enter the fixture in strong form themselves, winning three of their last four league matches to sit second in the National League South table. Manager Scott Rogers hopes to continue that run and inspire his team to legendary status as giant killers.

However, the Seagulls face a setback with the early recall of promising youngster George Birch by Exeter City. Birch, who joined on loan in November, made nine appearances for Weston, contributing significantly in both starts and substitute appearances. With his loan set to expire next week, Birch will return to Exeter ahead of their FA Cup third-round clash against Manchester City.

Manager Rogers expressed gratitude towards Exeter City’s staff, saying, “George has been an absolute credit since he’s been with us, a player who’s going to have a big future in the game. We wish him all the best going back to Exeter and hope he breaks into their first-team squad soon.”

As Weston-super-Mare prepare to face Grimsby, they carry the hopes of their supporters to make further FA Cup history and continue their remarkable cup run.
