A longstanding fixture in Weston-super-Mare, The Nightjar pub in Worle, could soon be transformed into a mixed-use development featuring homes and retail units. For years, developers have sought to purchase the pub, which was originally constructed in the 1970s alongside the neighboring Mead Vale shopping precinct.
In 2022, plans were approved to redevelop the Mead Vale shops and build 29 homes nearby. However, negotiations stalled as the owners of The Nightjar declined to sell. The pub finally closed its doors in September 2024 after the owners retired following 21 years of service.
Now, developers have submitted a fresh planning application to North Somerset Council proposing a flat roof extension on the ground floor to accommodate a takeaway and two additional retail units. The existing first-floor flat would be converted into two one-bedroom apartments.

The application notes that Mead Vale has historically functioned as a local hub, comprising small retail outlets, a public house, and community facilities. Yet the area’s commercial viability has been waning, marked by vacancies and turnover. The proposed redevelopment aims to revitalize the precinct by modernizing retail spaces, introducing flexible commercial units that meet market demand, and sustaining an active commercial presence in this residential neighborhood.
Although the previous planning permission for redeveloping the shopping precinct and adjacent vacant land expired, developers are preparing a new application for a “more efficient” housing scheme, potentially increasing the number of homes from 29 to close to 40.
Residents and interested parties are encouraged to view and comment on the planning application for The Nightjar as the area moves toward this significant change.
